Well, I finally managed to try the Apollo #20 with a really great superlather, emanating from the combined confection of the Valobra stick and the Proraso red. An amazing lather…rich, moist, with plenty for four passes or more. Unfortunately, the Apollo blade needed four passes to produce a decent shave….and it kicked, screamed, and dragged its way across my face for all four of them. The end result, a decent shave, maybe a 7.5 on my ten-point scale, but the process itself detracted from the overall rating…saved in large part by the terrific superlather. In fairness, I’m shaving with a 60+ year-old blade. There’s probably some oxidation on the edge, no matter how well its been stored. An emergency-use blade only, for those times when you’ve run out of everything else.
