Hellman’s has its new “Real” advertising campaign in full swing, trying to latch on the movement for things “real” started I suspect by Dove a couple of years ago and the “Campaign for Real Beauty”.
The TV ad and website for Hellman’s mayonnaise says: “Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise. Real. Simple. Made with eggs, oil and vinegar”.
Today I read the actual product label at the grocery store. Here it is:
SOYBEAN OIL, WATER, WHOLE EGGS AND EGG YOLKS, VINEGAR, SALT, SUGAR, LEMON JUICE, NATURAL FLAVORS, CALCIUM DISODIUM EDTA (USED TO PROTECT QUALITY).
They even have the audacity to list these ingredients on the nutrition information page, counting I suppose on the fact that very few people will actually look!
Hmmm….I can’t seem to remember my grandmother adding sugar or EDTA to her truly real homemade mayonnaise. And WHAT for Heaven’s sake are “natural flavors”?
Ernest Hemingway once wrote:“The most essential gift for a good writer is a built-in, shock-proof, shit detector. This is the writer’s radar and all great writers have had it.” Had he lived in this day and age, I’m sure Mr. Hemingway would have had much shit to write about.
