Debunking the “slow metabolism” theory of obesity

If I hear it one more time as an excuse for being fat, I’m going to scream. “Oh, its my metabolism..that’s why I have trouble keeping my weight down”. Bull! A well-controlled study just presented at the annual Endocrine Society meeting in San Fransisco, puts an end to that one…sorry for removing a very comforting belief! It turns out that people who tend to put on weight are no different than “natuarally” thin people…at least metabolically. The author speculates that overweight people may simply lack internal feedback on how many calories they are actually taking in. To quote Dr. Daniel Bessen, the study author, “…people who are tending to gain weight may not be getting accurate information on how much they are eating through biologic mechanisms”.
