A few days ago I wrote about marketing’s latest darling buzzword…”Real”, and how it is a pseudo-term that carries no obligation as to content or method of production, allowing the customer to interpret it in whichever way his/her fantasy permits.
While shopping yesterday I was attracted to the packaging of Nestlé’s Real Dairy Ice Cream with Natural Vanilla. The ingredients list revealed not only the presence of real cream, but a virtual chemical soup of stabilizers, colors, and preservatives. But don’t just take my word for it. here’s the ingredient list:
Ingredients
FRESH CREAM, MODIFIED MILK INGREDIENTS, SUGAR, GLUCOSE, EVAPORATED SKIM MILK, STABILIZERS*, NATURAL VANILLA FLAVOUR, PURE GROUND VANILLA BEANS, COLOUR. *STABILIZERS: MONO-AND DIGLYCERIDES, GUAR GUM, CALCIUM SULPHATE, CELLULOSE GUM, CARRAGEENAN.
MADE ON EQUIPMENT THAT ALSO PROCESSES PEANUTS/NUTS.
See for yourself, here. Thank goodness for mandatory labelling laws…can you just imagine what companies would be putting in the food supply if they didn’t have to report it? Hell, look at the shit they still put in even when they do!!!
Yes, it is amazing to me how many companies can utilize terms that are misleading and sometimes all together false. Good catch on this one. May have to go their website and call them on it.

For all the good that will do. The best bet is the old adage…”The customer votes with his feet”.
