I’ve said for years that food is an addiction, and not only that, it’s the one addiction we are genetically hard-wired for. From our moment of birth we are programmed to use food to soothe the pains of living. Now comes new evidence for the changes that overeating makes to the brain in creating pathways similar to those for drugs such as heroin. And as the researchers point out, it may not be easy to go back even when the overeating has stopped; the brain changes appear to be very stable.
