If you didn’t catch it last night, 60 Minutes did a rather thorough piece on Mount Athos. Filled with wonderful videography, it provides an outstanding glimpse into the lives and motivations of the monks living there. After 14 visits in the last 35 years, I can attest that this is a very accurate view of what goes on there, i.e. this was no setup for the cameras. It’s in two parts on the CBS web site. Really, really, worth watching.
Thanks to Mr. Dario for pointing it out to me.
I pulled this photo from my faded Ektachromes (does anyone still even know what that is?), which I digitally archived last year before they would disappear completely. This is from my first trip in 1975 at age 23.
